Lanternbit - Pixel Font for Games
A downloadable asset pack
Lanternbit is a small, clean pixel font for game UI, dialog boxes, HUDs and menus, in Regular and Bold. Version 1.1 grows it from 152 to 560 glyphs per style: Latin for most European languages and Turkish, Cyrillic, Greek, punctuation, currency signs and a set of game icons. Every glyph ships in TTF, WOFF and BMFont, drawn from the same bitmaps so all formats match.
New in 1.1
- New in 1.110: engine files for Godot 4, GameMaker, Construct 3 + JSON atlas (untested in engines)
- Latin Extended-A + Latin-1 symbols: Polish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Romanian (Ș Ț), Turkish, Croatian, Slovenian, Baltic, Esperanto, Nordic Æ Ø Œ Þ ð, plus £ ¥ © ® « » ± × ÷ ½ and more
- Cyrillic: the full U+0400–045F block plus Ґ ґ and № (Russian, Ukrainian, Belarusian, Bulgarian, Serbian, Macedonian)
- Greek: monotonic capitals and lowercase with tonos and dialytika
- Punctuation & currency: – — ‘ ’ “ ” „ … • † ‰ ‹ › € ₩ ₽ ₹ ™
- Game icons as characters: ♥ ♡ ★ ☆ ✓ ✗ ☠ ⚔ ☀ ☁ ☂ ♪ ♫ ♠ ♣ ♦ ⌂, arrows ← ↑ → ↓ ↔ ↕ and diagonals, ■ □ ▲ ▶ ▼ ◀ ● ○ ◆ ◇, and math ≤ ≥ ≠ ≈ ∞ √ −. Type HP ♥♥♥♡ or ★★★☆ straight into your UI text.
- Existing glyphs are unchanged, so text you already set looks identical. If you bought 1.0, just download again.
What you get
- 2 styles: Regular and Bold, 560 glyphs each
- TTF x2 and WOFF x2
- BMFont atlases: PNG +
.fnt(text) +.xmlfor each style at 1x, 2x and 4x - Grid PNG sheets per Unicode block at 1x, 2x and 4x, and glyphs.json with every glyph as pixel rows
- Specimen, README with metrics and engine notes, LICENSE
Specs
- 5x7 capital grid, 5 px x-height, 2 px descenders, line height 10 px at 1x
- Proportional letters; digits 0-9 share one width so scores and timers do not jitter
- 1 px letter spacing built in, no kerning pairs
- Pixel-perfect at multiples of 10 px. Both TTFs were rendered with FreeType 2.13 glyph by glyph at 10, 20 and 40 px with hinting off, default and forced auto-hint, and compared pixel by pixel to the source bitmaps: 10,080 checks, 0 mismatched pixels, no grey edge pixels. Windows DirectWrite and macOS CoreText were not tested.
Not included / limits
- No CJK (Korean, Japanese, Chinese), Arabic, Hebrew, Vietnamese stacked accents or emoji
- Bulgarian uses the standard (Russian-style) letter shapes, not the Bulgarian cursive-style variants
- Not tested inside specific engines. The README has setup pointers for Godot, Unity, GameMaker, LOVE, Phaser and CSS, but they are general notes, not guarantees.
- At sizes that are not multiples of 10 px the TTF will look uneven or blurry (true of any pixel font).
Free sample
The free sample has a Regular TTF with A-Z, 0-9, Cyrillic capitals and a few icons, so you can test it in your engine before buying.
License
Use it in commercial and non-commercial games, apps, videos and anything else, modify it, no credit required. Do not resell or redistribute the font files, on their own or inside another asset pack, font or library. Full text in LICENSE.txt.
How it was made
Each glyph is a pixel bitmap, and the TTF outlines, BMFont atlases and sheets are built from those same bitmaps, so all formats match. The page images were drawn with the font itself; the game screen is a simple mockup, not a real game. Also by me: Corelog (8x16 sci-fi terminal monospace), Bannerstone (heavy titles), Quillstead (storybook serif, Regular + Italic), Pocketpip (tiny 3x5 HUD) and Hudsmith Icons (169 icons you can type next to Lanternbit text).
